Meet the Founder: Rafa Pazos

From Teacher to Pickleball Lover

Pickleball was virtually unknown in Spain, and especially in Galicia, until recently. During the 2020 pandemic, a Physical Education teacher from Pontevedra, with over 20 years of experience in racket and paddle sports, sought new ways to teach safely under strict restrictions. By using badminton courts and individual paddles, he discovered a dynamic alternative: Pickleball, a sport already booming in the United States.

In 2021, APIGA (Pickleball Association of Galicia) was created, and he began collaborating in organizing events, school projects, and activities across the region. Over the next four years, he founded the Pickleball Club Pontevedra, established four sports schools, and organized tournaments and circuits throughout Galicia.

What started as a teaching solution became a true passion. With 15 years of experience managing tennis and paddle facilities, and over 25 years as a PE teacher and department head, he has long been involved in organizing educational trips—including routes along the Camino de Santiago.

Today, he serves as President of the Pickleball Committee of the FGT, president of the Pickleball Club Pontevedra, and is an active national-level player leading the growth of Pickleball in Galicia.

Inspired by decades of organizing school and sports trips—and his love for the Camino de Santiago—he created Pickleball Experience Spain, combining the best of Galicia with the opportunity to play Pickleball alongside people from different regions and countries.
